Is Telehealth for me?

Online Counselling or Telehealth is an alternate option, from face to face sessions, to engage for mental health support by using technology available to us. Pre COVID-19, telehealth choices for mental health therapy were limited, but have since become an increasingly viable option for many.

Telehealth sessions can take place via phone call or video conference. Providing clients with an online option has allowed for people to prioritise mental well-being while also balancing work, school and family life. Telehealth has also broadened the scope of clinicians that clients are able to access whom specialise in specific therapeutic modalities.

In NSW telehealth sessions are eligible for Medicare rebates.

How to prepare for your telehealth session:

  • Decide what type of telehealth contact works for you. Some people prefer to see the person on the other end and will opt for a video session, while others may feel a bit camera shy and prefer to maintain contact by phone call.

  • Ensure to have a private and comfortable space to speak from. Therapy will likely bring up some vulnerable topics and having the appropriate space for this will assist in the effectiveness of telehealth.

  • To connect for telehealth sessions, you can use a mobile phone, laptop or electronic tablet.

  • Make sure that all digital devices are fully charged. A headset is optional but can also be a useful tool in helping to maintain confidentiality.

  • Prior to session, test features necessary to engage in session, such as making sure that your camera, microphone, and internet are in working order.

Online mental health support is as simple as that!
